Photonic crystals(PC) are artificial photonic structures proposed in the 1980s, provide a most promising perspective pioneering a photonic information age since the electronic information age originated by semiconductor. Photonic crystals have gradually indicated potential applications in optical fields such as integration of minute photoelectron devices, interconnects for optical circuits, full optical communications and so on, due to photonic band gap and optical localization. Therefore, the study on characteristic and applications of photonic crystal is being attached more importance to, and become a subject of active research in the world.Photonic band gap structure of photonic crystal indicate its primary property, which is the base of design of application. So, the study on photonic band gap structure and optical transmission characteristic is an important part of basic research on photonic crystal, moreover, can guide people to comprehend and apply photonic crystal in reality.Photonic crystal includes one dimension(lD), two dimension(2D) and three dimension(3D) photonic crystal according to the spacial periodic dimension. At present, the study on 1D and 2D photonic crystals is more than 3D photonic crystals because the analysis and manufacture of 3D photonic crystals is difficult. 1D photonic crystal is relatively easy to study because of its simple structure. As a result, researchers have study 1D photonic crystal in more fields including band gap structure, nonlinear effect, metallic photonic crystal, photonic crystal microcavitiy, reflector, optical communication device and so on. Fink etc have proposed that 1D photonic crystal also acquire omnidirectional photonic band gap. It promotes the value of 1D photonic crystal in further. In the dissertation, the optical transmission characteristic on 1D photonic crystal is numerically simulated by optical transmission matrix method, it include the following aspects:1.We set forth the conception of photonic crystal in brief, and introduceits primary characteristic, applications and development, then enumerate the general theoretical analysis and manufacture method.2.We deduce the transmissions equation of photonic crystal on the base of Maxwell equations and ID transmission matrix, then give a calculation example.3.The relation between stop band gap width and the ratio of the material refractive index is studied, in addition, the effect of material refractive index on band gap width is also studied.4.Considering the influence of disorder arising from manufacture, we numerically simulate the different transmission characteristic brought about by multiplicate material and indicate its superiority.5.1D defect mode is numerically simulated in the case that defect layer ply is zero and nonzero respectively. Moreover, the conditions existing binary mode is studied.
