The manufacturing inductry plays an important role in the national competition and cooperation ability in global economy. And electronic manufacturing industry is an important part of manufacturing enterprises. However, electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) are often regarded as symbol of low technology,small profit and labor-intensive yet. In fact, margin and customer satisify can be improved by some project management instrument which are the improvement of production line procedure, the efficiency of equipment increase and the resultful cost control. It is very necessary to study how to apply project management theory in EMS.At first, some relative theories about EMS and project management are introduced. Four steps of project life cycle: the initiating, the planning, the implementation, the closeout and project management process are expounded. Nine knowledge areas and three control kernels are explained.Based on theory research, Pemstar company as a case is analysed in the thesis. The application of project management theory in this enterprise is studied. The initiating, the planning, the implementation and the closeout of project are analysed respectively. According to project management theory, schedule control, quality control and cost control are applied in Pemstar production operation. In the cost control, differences between quotaion cost and actual cost are compared by using Quote-to-Actual tool. In the schedule control, the main tools are Gantt chart and check list. In the quality control,6 sigma theory and DMAIC method are used.The innovation of the thesis is that cycle time of production lines exchange is quantitatively analysed and solved by using DMAIC method which is one of method of 6 sigma.The cycle time is reduced from 43 hours to 24 hours. This improvement plays an important role in the target achievement of project management. Moreover, two problems come from Pemstar are raised: one is the purview conflict and resource conflict between project manger and functional manager;the other is that how to improve the company's status between customers and suppliers. Some suggestions are presented.
