With the establishment of the socialism market economy system, China entered WTO in 2001, the door of the world market opened to China, meanwhile, all kinds of industries were also confronted with the drastic competition from the world, and the traditional planning economy system and management models were being destroyed. As an important part of modern integrated transportation system, waterborne transportation that plays an important role on national economy, unavoidably face the furious competition. In the trend of world marine soaring development, waterborne transportation industry needs urgently to be developed healthily and rapidly to match the demand from national macro-economic development target.On the basis of review of the history of our waterborne transportation industry development, this paper, combining the theory of competitive advantage, analyses the international competitiveness of China waterborne transportation industry from many points, including productive elements, market demand conditions, relevant industries, and enterprise's structure as well as strategy. After analysis and comparison, it is concluded that we have received remarkable achievement in waterborne transportation industry and have formed certain competitiveness in the international market. However, there is still a long way to reach the international advanced level. For example, waterborne transportation structure needs to be adjusted, basic establishments need to be improved, and the quality of service needs to be enhanced. Therefore, the paper proposed some Countermeasures and suggestions to raise the international competitiveness of China waterborne transportation industry.
