Research Of Macao's Tourist Industry Development

Macao, an international tourist city known as " Eastern Monte Carlo " is one of three major gambling resorts of the world. Tourist industry has long been a support industry of the economy of Macao, providing the dominant source of revenue and that of foreign exchange for the government. As a result, the gaining industry of Macau outshines others for tap of tourist industry. Supported by the special policy of the central government since its return to China, Macao government has had even clearer vision of development, opening up and invigorating gaming industry coupled with tourism. Though it suffered a heavy blow of SARS in 2003, Macau, which joined CEPA and established win-win partnership of cooperation with the Pan Pearl River Delta area following ups and downs, has been characterized as mutually complementary and fusing in the regional cooperation. The extended policy of liberalizing entry to Macau for the mainland Chinese renders it possible to quicken the pace of recovery and vitalization, thus raising the upsurge of travel of new round. With the objective of building it into the oriental Las Vegas of U. S. A, Macau is devoted to developing it into a comprehensive tour center combining gaming, culture, commercial affair, convention and exhibition and recreation. As the tourist industry advances by leaps and bounds, the overall economy will soar. "Eleventh five-year plan outline of national economic and social development" adopted at the Tenth Session of National People' s Congress that ended not long ago required Macao to develop plural economy moderately. Mr. Ho Hau-wah , the first chief executive of Special Administrative Region of Macao , has delivered a speech addressing the strategic step of the government to develop plural tourist industry as the breach at this point and changing the gaming industry from the original leading position into a component part of tourist industry.In the past few years much research has been conducted by scholars both from Mainland China and Macao on the development of tourism. Focusing on the analysis of the advantages, disadvantages and underlying crisis of its present tourist industry, this thesis presents the trend and strategies of tourist industry of Macao.
