The social responsibility of commercial banks is to increase the effectiveness of a third party by their Contribution. In our socialistic market economic system, commercial banks have different status and mission with other national or regional ones, so their social responsibility which are also different from them. The responsibility of commercial banks mainly includes three aspects: the responsibility of establishing sound management, optimizing resource allocation and creating a harmonious society.The social responsibility of commercial banks is not only driven by economic interests, but also by public pressure. As a result, the social responsibility of commercial banks has exerted a great impact on the corporate values. As so far, however, Research from domestic commercial banks and theoretical circles, which is regarding the relationship between assuming social responsibility and corporate value, is still in the blank except that a few practitioners of commercial banks have made qualitative description about them.In this dissertation, the objects of study are 14 commercial banks listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2006-2008, also the methods of combining the theoretical analysis and empirical analysis, qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis have been adopted. First, this dissertation makes a theoretical analysis with respect to the meaning on the CSR of commercial banks, the boundaries of social responsibility and its impact factors. Meanwhile, according to the theory of Social preference and Corporate Social Responsibility, the social responsibility of commercial banks is utilized to conduct a qualitative study on the value of those companies, successively to establish a comprehensive evaluation index system which meets practical needs of our banks. Moreover, a comprehensive evaluation of the actual situation on the base of the use of AHP on China's 14 listed commercial banks in 2008 to take up social responsibility. In addition, it conducts an empirical analysis of the impact of the socially responsible behavior of commercial banks on the value of companies, which in arriving at the social responsibility of evaluation index by listed commercial banks in 2008. The regression results show that: the curve describing the effect on the company's value that was caused by sound operation and optimizing the allocation of resources of the responsibility of commercial banks, was an inverted U structure which increased first and then reduced; While there is a non-linear and direct proportion relationship between the responsibility of creating a harmonious society and the value of commercial banks. As a whole, the impact of the social responsibility of commercial banks on the value of company was also an inverted U structure which increases first and then decrease. And such result can verify the existence of the boundary of social responsibility. Finally, according to the preceding analysis of incentives, it is imperative for us to put forward some policies and suggestions to encourage commercial banks to undertake the social responsibility of establishing a sound operation, optimizing the allocation of resources and creating a harmonious society. At the same time, to create the empowerment of the external regulatory environment and to endue industry and NGO the right of public opinion would also be significantly indispensable. This series of policies and recommendations will promote our commercial banks to undertake social responsibility, and they will play an extraordinarily vital role in our economic growth,the stability of society and sustainable development.
