Based on the6th census results, the Hui people (predominantlyMuslim ethnic group) in China was over10.59million, up by7.4%from9.86million as of2000(the year when the5th census was conducted).Over the last decade, Hui has grown to the second most populatedminorities, and has become the most widely distributed one. The firstHui people have diverse foreign origins, and many of whom are directdescendants of the Islamic ethnic group. These foreigners then settled inChina and gradually assimilated in each other’s culture, becoming aunified nation–Hui. All Hui people are Muslims, adhering to highethical standards under Islam. And the phenomenon what is huiintermarry with the han produced, make us pay more attention to thenational culture and religion of the hui nationality.Islam has rich cultural heritage, and the infamous “Koranâ€, hasbeen one of the most well-known heritages. While Koran definesIslam’s ethic principles, it also mentions the proper dress code(including color, fabric, style, etc.) for Islam. Th e Hui people derivetheir own clothing culture from Islam’s, and therefore, it is easy to seetheir religious practice of Islam just by their wearings.This paper primarily discusses the clothing culture of Hui people.To better interpret the clothing culture’s uniqueness and its evolvement,we also incorporate the Hui Culture and its Islamic background. Thereare five chapters in this paper: the first part,domestic and internationalresearch on the topic of relationship between traditional Islamicclothing culture and Hui clothing culture; apart from researchbackground, we also briefly discuss existing researching methodologies in this chapter;the second part. The origin and development of classicIslamism;the third part. The culture background of Hui people; we’lllargely focus on the origin of Hui, and how the origin has shaped theHui culture;the fourth part.The detailed discussion on Hui’s apparelcultures, depicting the characteristics of men’s clothing, women’sclothing, children’s clothing, and ceremonial dress;and the fifth part.We explore the impact of Islam on Hui culture and the Hui clothing,primarily through the interpretation of Koran. |
