Research On The Design Innovation Of Yogyakarta Traditional Clothing Patterns In Modern Men's Clothing Fabric

Traditional clothing culture brings material civilization and spiritual civilization created in the practice of Indonesian history and is the home of inspiration for modern clothing designs.Under the trend of globalization,the closer exchange of clothes and cultures of various countries has become a shortcut for Indonesian fashion to go international.This paper analyzes and explores design innovations and the applications of Yogyakarta traditional clothing patterns on modern men’s clothing fabrics.Men’s clothing has fewer models than women’s clothing which has a variety of models.Men’s fashion also uses simple patterns and adjustment techniques.Meanwhile,Yogyakarta’s traditional clothing,namely Surjan,is a typical Javanese men’s shirt with an upright collar;long sleeves;made of striated or floral silk fabric.Surjan’s clothing is one of the elements of culture.Surjan clothes are unique clothes because these clothes have symbols or parables,especially for Javanese people who usually wear them.Clothes that are rich in implied teachings related to Javanese philosophy.This work of art was created through various stages and methods.Anthropological methods are used for observations and quantitative methods are used for research,while the creation method used is the three-stages six-steps method according to S.P.Gustami.The embodiment technique used in the creation of the work is the print technique on cloth.Combined with the history of Yogyakarta’s traditional costumes,this paper discusses and summarizes the patterns of Yogyakarta’s traditional costumes in the design of modern men’s clothing.Discussing the characteristics and status quo of its development,as well as conducting a preliminary analysis of the development of Surjan’s clothing.combined with questionnaire surveys,interviews,observations,internet research and literature studies to understand the history,characteristics and concepts of Suryan’s clothing,build a solid theoretical foundation,classify and integrate,and explore future development paths and directions.Therefore,designing and implementing innovative patterns of Yogyakarta traditional clothing in modern men’s clothing fabric does not only discuss the fashion patterns,but also innovates for the development of Yogyakarta traditional clothing in depth.Create new and different designs with the help of modern design methods like shifting flowers,substitution,combination of addition and subtraction.Let progressive innovation produce more modern designs,so that this traditional Yogyakarta dress can be accepted by all levels of society,especially young people.
