China, the origin of tea, with a nearly5000-year history of tea drinking and first-rate techniques of making it, had created a unique artistic style of Matcha art in Tang Dynasty. For a long time, Chinese have held a kind of unique culture in Matcha history, including tea habitude, tea sets and Tea Poetry, etc. Drinking Matcha tea was popular in Tang Dynasty in China. In Song Dynasty, Matcha became a formal art of upper class and was admitted as the perfect combination of the era privileged elegance and wit. Matcha art fully represented the traditional Chinese culture both in its form and the spirit. This art was taken to Japan and other countries in Sang Dynasty by Japanese monk and rooted there, then developed into Japanese tea ceremony. Although forming in China, Matcha art was fading or even disappearing in Ming dynasty for many reasons. The aim of this thesis is to study the formation, skills, meanings and aesthetic value of traditional Chinese Matcha art, analyze the economical and social reasons of its perish, as well as record the current Match corporation and Matcha promotion activities in Shanghai. Hope this article can do some help to the revival of Matcha art in contemporary China.
