As the development of cities changes rapidly, all kinds of engineering constructions are influenced by geological conditions. So the research on the key geological engineering factors becomes an important subject.It’s an important part of urban geology, which provides simple and reliable geological reference for the planning department and also shows important significance for the harmonious coexistence of city constructions and the geological environment and the sustainable development of city. The evaluation of city’s land engineering capacity is determined in the course of land as a function of the use of the natural or the modified value. To evaluate the land engineering capacity, first we should analyze the geological engineering conditions. Then researching the city’s geological engineering environmental factors in dynamic changes of different degrees. It is because of environmental factors and their interactions, which leads to the changing of the city’s geological environment. So we need to find out the present situation, the characteristics of dynamic changes and the characteristics of the relationship between environmental factors.The study is based on the project about the key layers’characteristics of urban geologic structure and evaluation of the underground sources in Suzhou. A lot of drilling and soil sample data has been acquired and has been saved in the ArcCatalog. Then the following work begin. First, key engineering geological formations of the eastern plain in Suzhou area are classified. Second, a preliminary research analysis is launched according to the several local key engineering geological factors of Suzhou such as the groundwater outburst flood, piping flow sand, the liquefaction phenomena of sandy and soft soil seismic subsidence. Finally, introduce the concept about the value of cost and loss and establish the standard system for the evaluation of land engineering capacity based on the Arcgis platform. We use the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the expert investigation method to establish the weight of each index factor. Then make the land engineering capacity rating map of Suzhou area according to the country’s and regions’planning, which could provide the basic detailed information for Suzhou’s city planning and a scientific basis for the decision-making behavior of urban land constructions.
