The appeal of Reconfigurable System-on-Chip (RSoC) has grown in recent years for RSoC provides promising performance, flexibility and higher performance-price ratio. The performance of RSoC is greatly affected by HW/SW communication architecture and communication mode. Currently, HW/SW communication is opaque to the program users, developers need to understand the underlying hardware architecture and communication details to complete a software/hardware hybrid system. The design efficiency is low. In order to minimize the developers'workload and make the RSoC communication transparent to the program users, this paper researches the communication mode of RSoC, and has achieved the following results:First, a self-adaptive HW/SW dual communication mode is proposed and an adaptive decision algorithm to choose communication mode is built. According to the adaptive decision algorithm, it can automatically choose the communication mode between register-based communication mode and memory-shared communication mode. The algorithm is based on traffic between the hardware and software and combined the chain scheduling and simulated annealing algorithm to solve, the selection of HW/SW communication mode is transparent to the program users.Second, a dynamic memory management module (DMMU) is designed. The DMMU can efficiently manage the memory, and make the core-memory communication transparent to the program users. In order to validate the adaptive decision algorithm, the paper carried the simulated experiments. Experiment results showed that the self-adaptive HW/SW dual communication mode can optimize the communication efficiency and reduce the area overhead. Finally, the paper described the development of a Reconfigurable System-on-Chip prototype. The prototype system implements the accelerated DSP algorithms through the hardware functions. A set of hardware functions package, HW/SW dual communication mode and DMMU techniques are also implement to improve the communication efficiency and make the communication details transparent to the users.
