From the first-generation analog mobile communication systems to the current third-generation digital mobile communication systems, cellular mobile communications has experienced more than 30 years. As the first European digital cellular mobile communication standard, GSM system was officially available in Europe in 1991.Because of its public standards as well as strong roaming capabilities; it comes to an unprecedented development.GSM is one of the major wireless telecommunication systems in the world. And also, it is a dominant cellular mobile communication system of second generation. Based on the GSM network, its enhanced version, EDGE, has more advanced modulation technology and packet switching capability, which made the current GSM network more efficient and faster, This paper describes and analyzes the physical layer interface and control subsystem design and implementation of the protocol verification system of EDGE, which is based on the multi-core processors, picoArray. From the circuits switching in GSM to packet switching in EDGE, this paper made a detailed introduction. The main content of the paper is divided into four parts. First it conducted a system-level analysis. The architecture of the control and interface subsystem is given. Then from the perspective of interface and functional design, every module in the system has been defined in detail. Thirdly, the implementation process and control structures are described. Finally, system integration test has been discussed, which consists of module scheduling and communication procedure.
