With the development of globalization, more and more economic, cultural, educational activities extend to all over the world. Transnational corporations search the optimal production resources in the world, their products are sold to every corner of the world and more and more scholars go abroad for education and international academic conferences promote technical exchange between countries, in addition, more and more people choose to travel abroad and enjoy the exoticism. These activities promote interpersonal between countries, and also promote economic, cultural, scientific and technological progress, but the language barriers constraint more interpersonal, as Robert Levin said, "The last barrier for global e-commerce is the language barrier." Fortunately, computer hardware and software technologies are high-speedily growing in last two decades, especially in speech recognition, machine translation and speech synthesis. So, automatic speech translation assisted by computer has become a possibility. This article comes from the European Union project:EMIME (Effective Multilingual Interaction in Mobile Environments), the project will help to overcome the language barrier by developing a mobile device that performs personalized speech-to-speech translation, such that a user's spoken input in one language is used to produce spoken output in another language, while continuing to sound like the user's voice. Personalization of systems for cross-lingual spoken communication is an important, it is essential for providing more natural interaction and making the computing device a less obtrusive element when assisting human-human interactions. As the mobile device processing and storage capacity is limited and it can not take the speech translation tasks alone, so we adopt a client/server model that the client or mobile device is responsible for voice recording, encoding and decoding and playback and high-performance back-end server computer or computer cluster is responsible for speech translation processing tasks. This article describes the design and implementation of multilingual interaction in mobile environment, including client/server framework for the overall design, client-server interaction process design and the design details with the technologies used for developing client and server. Besides, client/server framework is the main framework for today's mobile Internet applications with limited resources of mobile devices that can obtain rich services from server through a wireless access to the Internet, and Google's cloud computing, Baidu's box plans are also based on client/server framework, so the design idea of this topic can become a guide for many mobile application developers.
