Under the trend of "mobile broadband", in order to compete with WiMAX 3GPP started LTE system. This system adopts advanced wireless transmission technologies such as OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access, OFDM), MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output, MIMO), etc. flat network structure and all IP system architecture. It can support maximum 20 MHz system bandwidth, its peak data rate is 100Mbit/s and its transmission delay is much shorter. Spectral efficiency of LTE system is 3 to 5 times of 3GPP R6. So the LTE system is a major innovation.The project which this paper is based on is a design and implementation of the physical layer of the base station in the LTE system. This project includes three parts:API which is the interface between MAC layer and the physical layer, the downlink transmitter and the uplink receiver. This paper mainly discusses the design and implementation of API from the engineering aspect, which includes the design of structure and functions of the API, the functions and work flow of each module of the API, processing on MTP messages and the scheduling on the physical layer. The project discussed in this paper is based on the picoChip platform, so the design is also combined with the characteristic of this chip. At last, coding of the API design is based C and VHDL.The contents of this paper mainly include four parts:In the first chapter it introduces development background and key technologies of the LTE system; In the second chapter it introduces the picoChip which this project is based on and its development flow; In the third chapter combining with the design of data-path, it introduces interfaces between API and the data-path; In the forth chapter it introduces the design and implementation of the API in detail.At last, the code of the API has been downloaded to the hardware, and the integration test with the physical layer is successful. It proves that the design is feasible.
