| Analogy has always been a hot topic of linguistics. In the traditional theory, analogy is treated only as a figure of speech. Nonetheless, analogy is considered as a matter of thought, a way of cognition. And analogy is pervasive in our daily lives and languages. It is embodied in nature and plays a fundamental role in organizing human being's conceptual system. Many achievements have been made in linguistics. Nevertheless, systematic studies of Analogy in economic discourse are far from enough. As Chinese economy grows very fast, written text has already taken in every aspect of economic activities, a large amount of analogies are flooding in business discourses and they arouse many scholars'interest. However, many of their researches only focus on the perspective of figure of speech or language on analogy. And these researches couldn't reveal the working mechanism of analogy. Enlightened by the previous studies, this thesis conducts a cognitive study on the analogy in business news which is attracting more and more attention. This thesis aims to explore the following questions: What are the typical analogies in business news? What are the typical characteristics of these analogies in business news?This thesis focuses its study on economic news reports on business journals. Samples are cited from articles that clearly dealt with economic topics, covering a wide range of finance, trade, management and marketing. Content analysis is adopted in the process of the data analysis. The samples are specifically classified and described. The next is the statistics analysis of the data, counting the total numbers and frequencies of occurrences of analogy in business news. This thesis is to identify categories of conventional analogies in business reports and the types of analogical mapping under each category. |
