The research of simulating Chinese calligraphy is not only significant for the inheritance and development of the Chinese traditional culture, but also helpful for progress of computer art and popularization of calligraphy art. In this paper, several key issues of stroke extraction of calligraphy tablet characters are analyzed: preprocessing, segmentation, stroke extraction, stroke contour recovery. And then we shall present the corresponding solutions.First of all, we introduce some image preprocessing methods, including:noise removal, word segmentation, image smoothing, contour and stroke extraction, in order to obtain explicit characters images from tablet picture. After processing, we can obtain the images of characters'contour and skeleton which contain information of tablet characters information can be obtained.Secondly, technology of stroke extraction of Chinese calligraphy tablet characters based on calligraphic font characteristics is focused. Then, a recovery method to restore missing parts of the stroke contour of calligraphic characters is presented, keeping in mind that the contour lacuna problem comes up during the process of stroke extraction. Experiment shows that stroke information could be efficiently got. However, in some complex cases, stroke extraction process still requires intervention for stroke extraction algorithm is elementary.Finally, some processing tools for stroke extraction of calligraphy tablet images are integrated, and a calligraphy stroke extraction system is implemented. More examples are to be ready with well-designed human-computer interaction environment to support further investigation.
