With the continuous development of computer applications, particularly the area of computer graphics and image processing, simulation of Chinese calligraphy effect has become hot spot of Non-Photorealistic Graphics. As a research field combining computer technology with art-painting, many aspects of Non-Photorealistic Rending is still in developing in that the valuation standard of it is uncertain. Rendering the internal texture of strokes is the key of realization the Chinese calligraphy by computer automatically. According to writing habits, the word can be rendered stroke by stroke. However, a training set should be prepared in this case. In fact, in the course of simulation specific texture effect, only a brush texture patches (BTPs) library with such artistic style built beforehand is enough.Hereby, an algorithm employing the non-interactive means is presented in this paper. Based on the markov random field and texture mapping technology, this algorithm is carried as follows: (1) Suitable BTPs are collected from hand-written artworks to build up a BTP library. Each stroke or a word with half-dry stroke effect in the BTP library is regarded a sample image independently. According to the distribution of the sample image texture, morphology method is used to segment the sample image and then the original artistic style of internal texture can be remained. (2) Windows system cursive and semi-cursive styles are regarded object images in the experiment. (3) The selection of texture block from sample image is random. First, the selected block is mapped to the object image by the affine transforms, and then the artistic style is simulated by subdivision of strokes. (4) Based on the former work, the progress of simulating the half-dry stroke effect in Chinese calligraphy is given in this paper. This algorithm that the calligraphy style is transferred from the sample image to object image explores a new approach for Non-Photorealistic Rending technology. The method based on non-interactive means computes simply and fast, at the same time easy to apply. Experimental results demonstrate the method can produce the similar style of the former calligraphy characters. Furthermore, it also proves that computer can simulate the half-dry stroke effect automatically.
