Although Chinese outline font shows good quality in shape output, the application of this font is limited in Digital Information Processing Device which is short of memory.Compression of Chinese font and design of compressed Chinese font are two of the difficult problems in Chinese Information Processing. Technology of structural Chinese font concentrates on characteristic of Chinese font. It figures Chinese font with shape description of strokes and the structure of character shape. This method compresses the repeated information of font shape and keeps the high output quality of character shape. The existing method can compress font well, but it's very complicated and time-consuming to create a new font. In this thesis, we discuss the compression method of Chinese font and put forward a method based on stroke extraction. This method compresses Chinese font with three steps: stroke extraction, stroke outline clustering and character shape rebuilding. And this method also gives us a convenient way to design new Chinese font.Stroke extraction is an important problem in Chinese Information Processing. In this thesis, we research on many stroke extraction methods and improve the stroke extraction method based on pair of concave points. This method introduces definition of stroke segment and extract stroke outline by stroke segment extraction and combination of stroke segments. By this method, we can get higher correct ratio of stroke extraction.In this thesis, we introduce a computer aid design system of structural Chinese font. We develop the system with the result of our research on structural Chinese font. This system can convert Chinese outline font to structural font automatically. By using this system we can shorten the time of designing a new font. The experiment result proves the high compression ratio and good quality of character shape by using our method. Compared with other method, this method shortens the time of create a new font and simplify the process of font creation. This method proposed a new field for Chinese font compression.
