More network application and larger network scale reveal the limitations of Internet network base on IPv4 protocol, such as lack of address and none of Quality of Service. Since 1991, IETF begins to research the next generation Internet protocol that is IPv6 protocol. Network topology management and Fault management are always primal requirement of network management system. As there will be a great deal of network device in IPv6 network and the redefinition of all kinds of protocols which are correlative with IPv6, the method and technique used in IPv4 network topology discovery and fault management can't work well in IPv6 network. So in the large network scale, especially in the IPv6 network, how to discover network topology and manage the network automatically becomes a new problem for the realization of network management. And it is also the research kernel of this paper. At first, this paper introduces IPv6 related protocols, by analyzing the difference between IPv6 and IPv4 protocol and researching the concept, technique and application in IPv6, this paper presents several problems which must be resolved in IPv6 network topology automatic discovery and fault management. this paper presents the method of network topology automatic discovery in IPv4. Explain how network topology works in Network Management, these two above are the basement of IPv6 network topology. Then this paper deeply studies these problems and finds out the designing and accomplishing methods. On the base of these methods, it designs and implements a network topology automatic discovery and fault management system in IPv6.Then, this paper presents a detailed structure and accomplished process based on the system. Finally, this paper gives system test results and makes a conclusion for future work.
