More network application and larger network scale reveals the limitations of Internetnetwork base on IPv4 protocol, such as expansibility, information safety and high qualityof network. In 1991, IETF began to research IPv6 protocol, the next generation protocol ofInternet. Network topology management, which would discover network topologyautomatically, update the topology periodically and manage the configuration of networkdevice, is always a elementary function of IP network system. Because of numerous ofnodes and redefinition of protocols, a great deal of network methods and technologies inIPv6 can't work well, which are used in IPv4 network topology appropriately. So in thelarge network scale, especially in the mixed network of IPv4 and IPv6, how to discoverand manage network topology automatically becomes a new problem for the realization ofnetwork management. And it is also the kernel of this paper.At first, this paper presents the effect of topology management in network system andthen promote the solution to the problem of automatic discovery in IPv6, by analyzing thedifference of the protocol between IPv6 and IPv4 and address, technique and application inIPv6. This paper puts forward several problems, which must be resolved in IPv6 networktopology automatic discovery system. Then the paper deeply studies these problems andfinds out the designing and accomplishing methods.The main work and achievements of the paper include:1. This paper presents the local link topology discovery method, based on IPv6 multicastaddress. It can discover all routers and hosts in a local link automatically, get the globaladdress, MAC address, name and other configuration information of these devices andidentify double-stack nodes in local link.2. This paper finds out the bone network topology discovery method. With this method, itis easy to automatically discover the connections between the routers in bone network,get the basal information of the device and to identify the double-stack routers in bonenetwork.3. This paper gives a topology update method based on life cycle, which can be used toupdate the topology discovery result periodically to keep same with the real networktopology.With all of above methods and techniques, this paper provides scheme of designing andalgorithm in IPv6 in order to satisfy the requirement of system.
