The Satellite Distance Measuring System consists of the Satellite Observing Sub-system that obtains the images of satellite and laser beam and the Laser Aiming Sub-system that runs synchronously with the Observing Sub-system, by which the images of the laser beam and the satellite are ensured in the same field of sight. However this structure can not make the laser beam point to satellite accurately. To solve this problem, the error between the satellite's reference point and the beam point of the laser beam should be calculated by image processing technology in the Satellite Observing Sub-system first. Then, the error can be used in the Laser Aiming Controlling Sub-system to trim the laser's direction, so as to make the laser point to the satellite accurately. The purpose of the paper is to get the error timely through image processing.In this paper, the development and application of image processing technology is introduced firstly. Then, the main steps of the process are brought forward as the following by analyzing the characteristics of the image and specific requirement for the processing. The steps are as followed: 1. Grey scaling to make the chromatic image into grey image. 2. Filtering the noise to improve the image quality. 3. Choosing an appropriate threshold value to form binarized image, in which useful images are separated from the background. 4. Fringe detecting to attain the edge information. 5. Using two effective edges to draw up two lines and get the coordinates value of laser beam point by calculating the intersection of two lines. 6. Calculating the error between the intersection coordinate value and reference point to obtain the final error.A vector edge scanning method is proposed in this paper that comes from edge scanning directionally. Through the scanning for the laser beam image from four directions, the image fringe information is detected and meanwhile the direction of the laser beam is obtained. This method can simplify subsequent process and improve the precision.This paper, which supplies a good reference for related research on improving the precision and real-time capability by using image processing technology, offers practical significance and application value.
