With the improvement of standard of living and especially the success of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, people's sense of fitness has been fully consolidated. But at present the fitness equipment with single function, which is lack of entertainment and interaction, can no longer satisfy people's pursuit of high-quality fitness. In order to solve this arising problem, this paper presents the research and development of fitness equipment embedded system based on distributed virtual environment.The research of distributed virtual environment has been a hot issue of computer graphics research. It has some major characteristics such as multi-sensory, immersive, interactive, imagination and so on. With the rapid development of computer hardware and the great fall of cost, this technology is widely applied in the fields of medicine, construction, manufacturing, entertainment, cyber games, military etc. The research and development of fitness equipment embedded system based on distributed virtual environment is a new try in the field of fitness equipment with virtual environment technology. With the fitness equipment as application object, the system can supports multi-users to interact in virtual scenes through network by using of computer, sensors, multimedia, networking and communication technologies.This paper firstly describes the characteristics, the application and the key issues of virtual environment, and then makes a presentation about the Cobalt software, which is a powerful tool for the development of a virtual environment system. This paper designs a systematic framework for the structure of the system and divides functions and levels, and discusses the functions of respective modules, as well as the relations of data exchange between the modules based on the characteristics of a distributed virtual system. Then with the examples of the fitness scene modules, network communication module, system management module of the distributed virtual system, this paper discusses the method of using of Cobalt software,LDAP protocol, Kdevelop and QT to realize the main modules of the system, which includes terrain rendering, the effect of the sky, dynamic time systems, human-computer interaction, networking functions etc. Finally, a running machine fitness system with a virtual scene is implemented.
