| In 1996, Paul Ginsparg first proposed the concept of overlay journal. With the rise and flourish of the Open Access Movement, overlay journal gets more concerns. Now it is a hot discussion topic in the area of open access.Overlay journal organically combines repository and open access journal. It may represent a new direction of the Open Access Movement development. It also may be a new type of online academic publishing model in the future. Based on repository (including subject repository and institutional repository), overlay journal provides a value-added information service in the form of open access journal. Therefore, overlay journal could be regarded as a new method which libraries in our country develop and exploit open access academic information resources on the web. It also should promote the construction and use of various categories of repository in China.First, this paper gives the definition of overlay journal, outlines the features of overlay journals, and describes the function of overlay journal in the scholarly communication system. Second, on the basis of cases study, the paper designs the workflow of overlay journal, and compares software tools for building overlay journal. Third, the paper does more in-depth study in how libraries launch information service by application of overlay journal, involving overlay journal's service model, organizing operation, long-term preservation, copyright protection, and user training. Finally, conclusion is drawn concerning the work and limitations in the paper, and prospects for development of overlay journal in the future. |
