This dissertation includes 4 sections. The first section exordium:the relationship between periodical and social development introduces the periodical's special styles as mass media, and the relationship between periodical and social culture, politics, and economy. By explaining what periodical is and how it could effectively work on the social development, this section sets the foundation of this study.The second section the brief history of periodical in China briefly introduces a development history of Chinese periodicals, from 1815 to nowadays; and especially emphasizes the contemporary history from 1949 the foundation of PRC. By reviewing the history, this section concludes that a stable social environment plays decisive role in periodical and periodical industry's development.The third section the analysis of periodical industry in China and a comparison with foreign industry compares the present periodical industry level with other mass media industries in China and abroad, based on the macro statistical data in 2008. Under the background of new trends of international periodical industry, analyses the gaps between Chinese periodical industry and other media industries, especially with foreign periodical industry. Concludes that there are huge developing spaces for the Chinese periodical industry in nowadays and recent future.The last part, the discussion on restraint factors of periodical industry in China, and development strategies based on the publication policies and status quo, and descriptions and analysis of anterior sections, explains the restraint factors that blocking the development of periodical industry in China. Raises counterpart opinions and strategies for the development of Chinese periodical industry in the future.
