With the rapid increment of online equipment and application services, higher requirement is put forward to traditional network management, especially for the campus networks,which require effectively control and monitoring of the existed network devices and network resources, so as to insure safety, reliable and efficient operation of the network,and early detection of potential network problems. While there are many commercial network management softwares and development kits which provide powerful functions, unfortunately, many functions are unnecessary for the campus networks. Meanwhile, due to the expensive of developing and maintaining the system, it is necessary to design and develop a network management system suitable for our campus network.On one hand, it provides a better network environment for users through improving the whole level and efficiency of the network management.On the other hand, the analysis of the monitor data can also provide factual information for the innovation and upgrading of campus network.Based on the background of the requirement of campus network management, this thesis studies the problems of campus network managemnet based on SNMP.Firstly, the background of the research and the development status of network management is reviewed.And the related concepts and the technologies is introduced, focus on the general model of network management and the principle and application of the Simple Network Management Protocol(SNMP). Secondly, the requirement analysis and the overall design of the campus network management system are carried out.A three independent layers architecture,namely front-end user layer, business logic layer and data persistence layer, is put forward. In the meanwhile, the whole system is divided into six modules, i.e., device management module, resource management module, project management module, data view management module, system management module.The data structure of the system is designed and demonstrated. Then the implementation principle and method of the system data persistence function, periodic active monitoring function, equipment status data acquisition function, passive capture function of the device event, E-mail alert processing, graphical display of data, front-end user and the server-side business processes and data exchange functions are carried out in detail. Finally, the test results of the system is illustrated, which have been performed in the real campus network condition.The test results of system show that all abovementioned goals has been achieved, the system is stable and reliable, and has no effect on the network environment under reasonable load condition.
