With the expanding and constant informatization construction of colleges and universities,they will purchase a good deal of large-scale hardware and software facilities. Thus, networkmanagement in colleges and universities will face heavy pressure because of the expandingnetworks and increasing complexities. Then highly efficient and practical network managementsoftware, which can maintain and manage the whole campus network and serve for teaching andscientific research, is pressing. Although there are much commercialized network managementsoftware in IT markets, in a sense, they are just like operating system, because what they provideis a universal network management platform. In addition, these software are relatively expensiveand require high-performance hardware environment. This paper studies current situation ofnetwork management techniques, according to the features of campus network planning inZhengzhou College of Animal Husbandry Engineering, and design a based-SNMP campusnetwork management system, whose network management functions include topologymanagement, function management, breakdown management, deployment management, and soon. This system has good reference values to network management of colleges and universities.At first, this paper presents general situation of network management, describes some basicconceptions, basic functions, system structures, basic protocols and development tendency, andexpounds model SNMP, SNMP protocol operation, message form, and other relative contents.Secondly, according to campus network features of our college, this paper proposes apractical design scheme of campus network management system, which includes requirementanalysis, system structure, module structure and data base design.Subsequently, this paper discusses and researches topology discovery arithmetic, which isused for system implementation. Using routers and layer 3 switches as backbone networkdevices, this paper proposes the backbone network topology discovery arithmetic, and based onthis arithmetic, elaborates on it and comes up with the theory and the concrete computationalmethod of topology discovery arithmetic in data link layer.Finally, based on the design scheme, data is collected from proxy devices by making use ofSNMP+++ and saved in data base. Thus, the status of campus network is displayed on intuitivecharts or graphs, whose data comes from that collected previously, calculated and analyzed. Inthe end, this campus network management system achieves anticipatory functions such asfunction management, breakdown management, deployment management, and so on.
