Image processing technology is hot in the field of information processing. It is widely used in computer vision, earth resources surveying, meteorological information and other fields. With the fast development of computer tehnology and extending of applieation improve the speed of image processing has been one of the key problems in image processing. Image parallel processing technology has proved to be one of the most effectual technology for increasing image processing speed.Many image parallel processing system, such as MP and Clusters has not wide used due to many disadvantages as large scale, high power consumption and hard maintenance. Vector processing is a technique to process lagre amount of data with intensive computing. Using vector processing technique, micorprocessor can develop more Data Level Parallelism in image processing and improve the peroformance.This thesis based on the vector processing technology and the characteristics of image processing, we carried out our study on the design of efficient and flexible general image vector architecture. On one hand, the local computing of image processing is firstly analyzed by mathematics in this thesis, and then one vectorization theory is provided for image processing. Based on the theory, we proposed the image vector processing operation and design a 32-bit RISC instruction set. On the other hand, using the basic idea for mixed scalar and vector execution to design units' architecture and analysis the technology of vector operation instructions, vector memory instructions, pipeline and so on. Then, we also designed a PCI communication card, in order to achieve the communication between PC and the vector processor, and to form a relatively complete image processing system.Finally, the accuracy of the image processor is verified on the platform of Xilinx's Virtex 5 series FPGA. By comparing the theoretical analysis and the results of experiments, it is proved that the image processor has good performance in image processing,and laid a solid foundation of chip.
