PON is the abbreviation of Passive Optical Network. Compared with the active optical access technology, PON eliminates the active equipment between the central and the terminal, which enables easy maintenance, high reliability, low cost, and economization of fiber resources. PON is the major solution of FTTH in future.Throughout a series of technical evolution of APON, EPON, GPON, etc., PON has become the widely accepted technology of the access network. With a high-bandwidth, high reliability, and economization of resources, PON has the capacity of transmitting of TDM, IP data and video broadcasting. And because GEPON use the technology of Ethernet, by using standard Ethernet frame, it can carry the current mainstream business-IP services without any conversion, making it the most popular PON network technology. With GEPON technology, the pure fiber optic cable and Optical Network Unit (ONU) with high integration can be achieved, and it offers a variety of circuit applications based on the user interface to meet the broadband, telephone, video and other needs. The telephone and network exchange line equipments are simplified. The investment and construction of layer II switches are saved. The network construction is greatly simplified and the cost is significantly reduced. This thesis was based on the current status of the access network of the Qingdao Branch of China Unicom. Through the construction of testing network, We focused on the practical application, performance, stability, etc. and gained the first-hand testing data. The core, the terminal and the transmission segments were separately analyzed and data were compared with the theoretical parameters. The technical feasibility had been demonstrated. In addition, to comply with the characteristics of modern communication networks, the interconnection between GEPON and existing network had been analyzed, which provides a foundation to the wide usage of this technology in the future.
