RTU is the core device in charge of data acquisition, uploading and command executing between surveillance center of SCADA system and industrial field. RTU needs to have the integrated functions and reliability to meet the needs of remote and distributed application, for the purpose of adapting to the features of SCADA application field such as long distance, large territorial scope, position dispersed, rugged natural and electrical environment.This paper makes analysis on the existing RTU from the angles of application suitability and economical efficiency, and provides effective solution to the disadvantages of existing RTU:(1) RTU can smartly provide remote communication interfaces according to the network condition of the application field;(2) RTU offers new solution on I/O interface—distributed I/O interface;(3) Highly- modularized hardware and software system;(4) RTU offers standard and open communication interface, protocol interface, software interface and data interface.RTU can fully adapt to the network and I/O conditions in SCADA application field with the flexible remote communication interfaces and distributed I/O interfaces. Meanwhile, RTU's features of modularization, standardization and opening can improve its customization and compatibility so as to save customers' cost and make it have strong market competitive advantage.This paper builds RTU's hardware platform using RCM3010 as master MCU, C8051F040 and CC2480 as submaster MCUs so as to expand remote communication interfaces(Ethernet, GPRS) and communication interfaces for distributed I/O nodes(RS-485, CAN, ZigBee). RCM3010 builds up software platform based on embedded real-time operating systemμC/OS-Ⅱ, and develops following application functions to meet the SCADA's application demands: (1) Modbus gateway; (2) Transparent data transmission; (3) Network extending of CAN I/O nodes; (4) Network extending of ZigBee I/O nodes.This paper's RTU solution meets the demands of application suitability and economical efficiency in SCADA application field, so it has important application values and good economic benefits.
