Dam safety monitoring is of great significance. Currently, automatic monitoring system for dam mainly uses wired monitoring method, which has some unavoidable defects, such as the heavy workload, large investment, inconvenience of expansion and maintenance while building the network. In recent years, with the maturity of the wireless sensor technology, and its application in infrastructure monitoring, military, emergency services and medical health field, to make wireless sensor network used in dam safety monitoring system become possible, and obtain a certain degree of development. ZigBee has been developed in recent years as a short-range wireless communication technology, comparing with other short distance wireless communication technologies. Advantages of ZigBee are as follows: Low-power, low data rate, low-cost. These features just meet the requirements of dam safety monitoring .So, using ZigBee technology in dam safety monitoring system is a good solution.From an engineering point of view of the actual, this paper presents the design of the dam safety monitoring system mainly including the following aspects:Firstly, the dam safety monitoring system structure is designed according to the basic functions of dam safety monitoring requirements. This system mainly consists of dam sensors, ZigBee nodes, power supply system, wireless transmission system , management center .Secondly, hardware circuit of coord, router and rfd node which based on the CC2430 radio module is designed. Coord circuit include serial communication interface circuit, LCD interface circuit, key circuits and power supply circuit. Router and rfd circuit include sensor signal conditioning circuit, sensor interface circuit and power supply circuit.Thirdly, wireless sensor network software components of wireless data transmission, wireless receiver, sensors signal acquisition, coord and the PC-Serial communication .Fourthly, data management software is designed to complete the functions of data processing, storage, query, curve drawing, and wireless network topology drawing.Lastly, the system is tested after the combination of hardware and software modules, which proves wireless networking reliable, nodes collecting data accurate, and meets the needs of further research topics.
