The oil pipeline transportation plays more and more important role in the national economy. As a result of inevitable aging, erosion, abrasion and sabotage, pipeline leak occurs frequently, which not only affects the normal production, but also courses great loss of oil. So pipeline leak detection and location have become a important topic. Though several leak detecting and locating methods are available, they are deficient in accuracy and sensitiveness for pipeline leak detetction and location. Therefore, it is significant that establishing a set of effective detection system for pipeline leak, to protect environment and reduce loss as far as possible.A choice of wavelet bases in pipeline leak location is proposed through analyzing the characteristics of negative pressure wave as pipeline leakage based on the research of wavelet transform theory and wavelet singularity theory. The integration and implementation method of long oil pipeline leak detection and location systems is given based on Virtual Instrument Technology. Combined with actual situation of long oil transported pipeline, a special signal conditioning module is presented. In order to ensure time synchronization on every pipe station, a synchronous acquisition module based on multi-threading comparison is put forwarded. System has been running at a pipeline and the experimental analysis shows that the system is effective and correct.Experimental results show that the long oil pipeline leak detection and location system based on virtual instrument can detect and locate the leakage in time, which is capable of maintaining the the safe operation of the pipeline effectively. The choice of wavelet bases and the a synchronous acquisition module based on multi-threading comparison provide a effective method in detection and location of the pipeline leak.
