As major reason resulting in property loss and casualty, vehicle accident has caused wide increasing concern, especially in China, the happening of traffic accident is keeping high in despite of lower volume of retained vehicles. It is impossible to acquire high precision by quantitative analysis on the traffic accident via hand-calculation method owing to its diversity, complexity and instantaneity. With the development of computer technology, numerical analysis method is available for a scientific theoretic basis of recurrence of the vehicle crash accident. Reconstruction technology for crash accident, which focuses on redescribing, simulating and representing the accident occurred by virtue of theoretical mechanics in the light of traces on the accident scene, is intended to figure out the running condition before crash and represent the entire accident to reasonably judge the attribution of responsibility. Hence, reconstruction technology plays an extremely important significance not only in terms of identifying and handling the traffic accidents rapidly and exactly, managing on the archives of traffic accident effectively, but also in visual road traffic teaching and safety education.With the development of computer technology, especially the virtual technology, many development toolkits for physical engine, namely physics development toolkits, such as ODE, Havok, Vortex and Newton, are developed. Such above development toolkits covers the algorithm of classical mechanics and kinematics and take great advantage of some fairly mature algorithms and optimize them, moreover, the built-in crash detection system is a solid convenience for the dynamics simulation of virtual object.This paper conducts a research for accident reconstruction based on the physical engine, and the details are summarized as below:1. Making an analysis on mathematical models, mainly CRASH and SMAC, available for common accident reconstruction method and pushing them actualized. The outcome shows CRASH model can greatly narrow the estimated range of initial velocities before the accident, but SMAC can simulating the stop position of the vehicle well after the accident.2. Making a physical simulation of the accident course by virtue of ODE and correspondingly optimizing the simulation algorithm for the purpose of improving the precision of simulation, utilizing simplified GEM model to realize the simulation of the tyre and ground force, and optimizing the integral solving method to conduct integral operation by improved Euler method.3. Making an analysis on test result error between accident reconstruction method based on ODE and SMC and actual measured data to verify the feasibility of accident reconstruction method based on ODE.The work and research this paper concerned and analysis of test result acquired offer not only a sound reference for further simulation of accident reconstruction based on physical engine, but a scientific basis for analysis of actual accident as well.
