Spatial database is a hot spot on database research. Spatial index, database API, and query tecnolgy have treated as main content of research. Spatial objects, which described by spatial data and property data, are stored in spatial database. Spatial data describe the spatial object with the information of location, shape, and distribution. Property data described the unspatial information of spatial object such as name and domain attributes. For the amount spatial object and the complexity of spatial query, spatial query has become the key to application of spatial database and a hot point in the research of spatial database.Firstly, this paper research the spatial database index and query language, compare the advantages and disadvantages of various methods, then take a kind of multi-level spatial index based on grid and R-Tree index to improve the proficiency of spatial index on create, query and modification; Secondly, this paper analizes mainstream cases of geometry spatial data management, then take the PostgreSQL as rearch target. Based on the research of PostgreSQL architechture, this paper deeply study the mechanism of the spatial plug-in PostGIS for supporting geometry spatial data, and study the GIS application server GeoServer and the map tools Openlayers, a web spatial database query system, which following OGC stands, has been designed by open source mind.Based on the above theories and design result, the query system was implemented and used on campus map query. Many basic functions such as userdefined map, showing map, marking map, property data query and other advanced functions such as distance computing have been implemented.The related research and application show that open source way can compare commercial way to manage geo-spatial data, for its advantage in cost and capability in requirement. This system has meeting the system requirements. Construction of GIS using open source module must be growing quickly along with the improvement of open source database.
