Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is a new broadband wireless network architecture with the features of self-organization and self-healing. Since nowadays the researches on WMN have been emphasized on both academically and industrially, the potential solution of available bandwidth measurement and routing protocol is being hot topic. In this paper, an available bandwidth measurement algorithm based on network allocation vector is given. The algorithm obtains the NAV information of its neighbors through MAC "listening" mechanism, stores the information into its buffers, and calculates the available bandwidth of the investigated node by the ratio of its channel accessible time to the measurement duration. The algorithm uses a passive measurement method without additional communications load to wireless mesh network. The simulation results show the proposed scheme, compared with other available bandwidth measurement algorithms, is more accurate and has smaller costs, which can completely reflect the collision and contention between nodes. The second part of this paper where a new routing protocol EAODV based on the AODV is proposed. The new routing protocol make use of a cross-layered model between network layer and MAC layer to obtain the available bandwidth and loads of the node, calculates the end-to-end link's quality through a method of integrated metrics, and then chooses a better routing. The simulation results show that the proposed EAODV protocol improves the delay and the throughput of wireless mesh network signifieantly and balances load simultaneously.
