MANET is a highly dynamic topology self-organizing network that nodes can move in any speed and any direction. MANET do not have fixed information infrastructure, which is a group of autonomous wireless nodes or terminals of mutual cooperation to complete network communication and use a distributed approach to network management. MANET is a combining of mobile communications and computer networks. On one hand, MANET exchanges information using the computer network packet exchange mechanism, rather than the circuit switched telephone network exchange mechanism. On the other hand, the network terminal can be mobile in any way, with wireless transceiver system equipment. MANET nodes not only can move randomly, but also has the function of routers and hosts. MANET can be quickly formed a communication network in anywhere and in any time, which is wildly used in emergency communication and disaster relief.Routing protocol in MANET is always a research focus and difficulty. Currently, researchers have proposed dozens of MANET routing protocols. These routing protocols can be divided into table-driven routings, on-demand routings, location-based routings, hierarchical routings, and multi-path routings. Each routing protocol is developer for a specific design application, and there is no routing protocol which can be applied to all cases. Therefore, we should design and development of corresponding routing protocol according to the actual application scenario. This paper focuses on the plenty number of nodes and high node density features of ad hoc network to propose a protocol, which is used cross-layer method to design the MAC layer and routing layer. In the MAC layer, we use time division multiplexing and frequency division multiplexing hybrid distribution channel MAC protocol to reduce the network channel conflict. In the routing layer, we use a two-tier clustering routing algorithm to improve channel utilization. In mobile ad hoc networks, MAC layer protocols and routing layer protocol are not isolated. They need to share information with each other, according to the function of other's parameters to adjust their configuration. In order to improve and optimize network performance, we consider to use cross-layer optimization approch to joint design MAC layer and routing layer, making the MAC layer and routing layer do not have clear boundary. We implement the cross-layer protocol in the OPENT simulation platform, and test the protocol performance in the large scale mobile ad hoc network.
