The middle and high rate sensor networks (MHR-WSN) is a special networks, which is based on traditional wireless sensor networks. MHR-WSN combines with many technologies. These technologies include embedded techniques, mobile communication techniques, distributed information processing techniques, modern network techniques and so on. MHR-WSN is capable of sensing, acquisition, integration, transmission, processing a variety of environmental monitoring object. MHR-WSN has huge research value and application value on military, medical, security, industry, agriculture and other fields.Compared to the tradition networks, MHR-WSN has specificity in the amount of data and transmission rate. The resource of sensor node is quite limited, so to save energy, guarantee QoS (delay, jitter, packet loss, throughput), improve reliability has become the premier performances in the MHR-WSN. Data transmission is decided by routing protocols, so routing protocols have major impact on network performance. While the traditional wireless sensor network routing protocols can’t meet the special needs of high-speed sensor networks, special routing protocols are needed for specific application scenarios. These special routing protocols can improve energy efficiency and ensure QoS.This paper concentrates on the cross-layer routing protocol of MHR-WSN, and the main responsibilities are:(1) The composition and characteristics of MHR-WSN, Cross-layer optimization are introduced, and a few classic cross-layer routing protocols are focused.(2) In order to improve energy efficiency and reliability of data transmission, this paper presents a based-Ant colony cross-layer routing protocol for MHR-WSN (A-CRP). A-CRP combines with the ant colony characteristics and power adaptive technology. The routing strategies are based on the parameters of the physical layer. According to the distance between two adjacent nodes, the sender adjusts transmit power by itself after the path was chosen, which can avoid wasting too much power.(3) In order to meet the demands of the practical application in MHR-WSN, based-QoS cross-layer routing protocol for MHR-WSN (Q-CRP) is proposed. Q-CRP is based on SPEED and multi-path routing protocols. The cost function is designed in accordance with the parameters of the physical layer, link layer, network layer and application layer. Then the high-speed path, medium speed path and alternate path are chosen in accordance with the cost function. Lastly, multiple paths are select to transmit data. Finally, the performance of A-CRP and Q-CRP are estimated through simulation experiments. The results show that A-CRP and Q-CRP have better performance in real-time of transmission, balance of the network load, extend of the network life cycle and so on.
