Embedded system and Multimedia technology combines together with their synchronized development. The multimedia applications in embedded system are becoming more and more. It is more and more important to support the display of pictures and playback of multimedia files with different kinds of file types in those multimedia applications.In this project, a set of player software supporting many popular media formats is designed and achieved, which is on the platform of the popular embedded smart mobile device based on Windows Mobile system, and the open source multimedia player software, MPC is its prototype.In the thesis, the following parts are described:1. Introduce embedded operation system Windows Mobile and its support on the multimedia are introduced.The present situation and development trend of the multimedie technology is analyzed.2. Expound the concepts and basic knowledge of multimedia technology and multimedia player are introduced. Discuss how to classify the multimedia. Study and analyze the principle on digital multimedia.3. The compressing technology in multimedia is introduced, including the basic ideas, technology fundamentals and coding standards of coding and decoding of pictures, sounds and videos. Discuss on the principle of data compress. Study and analyze the classical algorithm used in multimedia, such as Run-Length coding, Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, transform coding.4. A codec software is designed and achieved by using DirectShow multimedia framework. The design and development method of the codec software are discussed systematically. With MPC as prototype, an MPEG-1/2 decoding software is developed under DirectShow framework, and the decoding and playback of sound and video files with Microsoft format are developed by using Windows Media Player SDK.5. The design and development of the software are discussed, including user demands, block structure and module separation of the software and the design and development of user interface.The key and difficult points in the thesis are to study the principles of multimedia playback under DirectShow framework and the design and development of the scheme based on Windows operation system (Windows XP) and the migration of the Windows XP codes to Windows Mobiles 5.0, including the examination of its feasibility.
