Continuous development of computer science and network technology has witnessed an increasing amount as well as a strengthened significance of data in household and small-and-medium-sized enterprises environment. Following this inevitable trend, a common concern today is how to utilize current storage facilities to manage existing data. With a purpose to address the above-mentioned concern, this thesis is dedicated to the construction of small-sized network storage system specifically designed to satisfy practical requirement raised by families and small-and-medium-sized enterprises. Small-sized network storage system is featured by its single-and-focused function, standardized technology and simple way of implementation which altogether gains it a promising market potential.Following a presentation of contemporary network storage technology and respective features of mainstream network storage proposals on the basis of technology development, small-sized network storage system selected X86 framework computer which has phased out in daily use as hardware platform. Open source Linux is picked as operation system which enables open source or free shareware to provide network storage service. System security and exclusive features are emphasized through shaping of the system and re-interpretation of various modules.This thesis focuses on the discussion of software construction of small-sized network storage system and design of practical methods to bring small-sized network storage system into reality. Through analysis of key system technology, a general structure of the system and content structure is settled while the launching program design is accomplished. Based on LINUX operating system, system kernel is re-coded which in turn bring about construction of major network storage application system. Varied approaches are taken to realize system interface, including web, cli, SNMP and etc.As a conclusion, this thesis takes the initiative to run tests on the completed small-sized network storage system. Outcomes from functional test and performance test show that establishment of small-sized network storage system can effectively address problems existing in domestic and small-and-medium-sized enterprise date storage environment.
