With the explosive development of computer and network technology, informationtechnology has penetrated into all aspects of our lives. Along with the continualimprovement of informatization, the amount of data is increasing rapidly. In order to makethe storage of massive data more effective, network storage has been extensively usednowadays. Due to the global energy shortage, the high energy consumption of the largedata centers has attracted wide attention in recent years. The energy consumption ofstorage devices accounts for about33%of the total energy consumption in data centers.How to reduce the energy consumption of the storage node is becoming a critical issue inenergy saving.Aiming at this problem, we propose a solution by using embedded system with lowpower consumption and high access performance to build network storage nodes. Wedesigned a new type of network storage node based on embedded platform. Aftercomparing a number of microprocessor and embedded system, we chose ARM EmbeddedLinux as our development platform and embedded development board based onARMv5TE88F6281as our platform kernel. We built up a complete ARM EmbeddedLinux System. To achieve the network storage feature of the system, we focused on theanalysis and transplantation of the iSCSI protocol, and made the iSCSI target functionavailable. At last, to achieve further reduction of the energy consumption of embeddednetwork storage nodes, we analyzed the power management technology of embeddedsystem and ARM architecture, and made some study about its implements on embeddednetwork storage nodes.We tested on the performance and energy consumption of network storage nodes withIOmeter and power monitor, and made a comparison with traditional server networkstorage nodes. The result shows that the implements of embedded network storage nodesof our project has a comparable transmission performance to server network storage nodes,but reduce energy consumption by about10times.
