With the development of Internet, especially the emergence of new kinds of networks, the requirement of mobility is increasing. Mobile IP enables a mobile node with single interface access the Internet at anytime and anywhere. Nowadays, heterogeneous wireless networks are used world wide. However, no network interface itself can keep communication connectivity and efficient anywhere. Therefore, mobile node may use various types of network interfaces to obtain durable and wide area network connectivity, and also better services. Currently, specifications of Mobile IPv6 lack the support of mobile nodes with multiple addresses used simultaneously. Accordingly, there exist some problems about performance and implementation when mobile node uses multiple interfaces simultaneously. In the meantime, as new optimization technology, cross layer design is becoming widely used in wireless communication and is also hotly discussed in the field of mobility management.First, we introduce the basic mechanism of Mobile IPv6 and advantages and problems of multi-interface mobile node. Then, we summarize a numble of cross layer design approches and classify them. We propose the cross layer frame in mobile node and the design principles. Then, we apply cross layer design to handover process of multi-interface mobile node which was validated theoretically that it can reduce the handover delay greatly. At last, we apply cross layer design to interface selection and we define an interface selection method which concerns user preferences, application requirement, type of interface, link characteristics, and so on. To analyze the performance of interface selecting schema, we develop a module supporting this proposal based on NS-2 and then do the simulation. Comparing the packet loss and handover delay between bandwidth-based interface selection mechanism and our interface selection method, we get the conclusion that the schema proposed in this paper can utilize human experience to select the most favorable interface for an application.
