For the traditional WAN File Services, the management mechanisms are always implemented in passive mode (the programe code), so it is quite inflexible for the system reconstruction when these mechanisms change. Moreover, the systems usually ignore external environmental impacts, such as user behaviors, which results in their poor adaptability in the complex and volatile external environment.Focus on researching rules, rule description and rule conflicts in the area of WAN File Services and learning from the expert system architecture, Rule-based WAN File Services builds a flexible and adaptable storage application. Firstly, get rules that are management mechanisms in the area of WAN File Services. Secondly, describe these rules and store them in the rule warehouse. Thirdly, construct rule management interface and rule engine, where the former used to manage the rules, and the latter used in searching, analyzing and reasoning rules. Finally, build the storage application based on the rule warehouse. The upper level storage application communicates with the lower level rule warehouse by rule engine which controls the performance of the system by analyzing and reasoning rules in the rule warehouse. In our progosed Rule-based WAN File Services, the system can change in the management mechanism by modifying rules in the rule warehouse other than the programe code, which makes the system flexible and adaptable. What's more, the system also acts external environment-related information to statistics, discoves rules from statistics and writes rules into the rule warehouse. Considering the upper level storage application based on the lower level rule warehouse, the systems become much more adaptable when encountering a complex and ever-changing external environment. The experiments show that the Rule-based WAN File Services can provide a range of file services, and perform correctly with the control of rules in the rule warehouse.
