EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution), as a transitional technology in evolutional of GSM to 3G, which can provide faster speed in network and larger data transmission, and has been highly attentioned.Based on Principle of GSM/EDGE Mobile Communication System, and combined with the GSM/EDGE handset chip researched in one company, this thesis analyzes the advantage of EDGE technology and researches deeply in followings.This thesis analyses the Principle of GSM/EDGE Baseband Communication System and the channel coding/decoding specifications in detail, and expatiates the types of logic channel and muti-frame combination structures, those were based upon by the design of the channel coding/decoding module.This thesis concludes the process of channel code and the type of parity code, convolutional code, puncture, interleaving, and so on. Those are good for reusing familiar framework and realizing the optimizatial design.This thesis provides a simulation model of the baseband channel coding/decoding system, and discusses the performance of viterbi algorithm specifically. The result of simulation about the baseband channel coding/decoding system was analyzed in detail.Considering the all-purpose and perfect, the hardware circuit of channel coding/decoding was presented in this paper, which is divided into some sub-modules, and the design and optimization of these sub-modules were analyzed.This thesis discusses viterbi decoder especially, which was realized and optimized using Register Exchange and Trace Back, the hardware spending and system performance in two ways was analyzed and compared.Funcation verification and FPGA verification were given in this thesis to verify correctness of the realized channel coding/decoding, which ensured the funcational and synthetical of the design.Finally, the result of synthesis about the channel coding/decoding module was analyzed in this thesis, the hardware spending and system power are excelled comparing with prevenient version. With test in SoC verification platform based on FPGA, the result proved that the realized channel coding/decoding module tallys with the specifications of GSM/EGDE, and satisfies the requirement of the company.
