Distance education, which comes into being with the development of modern science and technology, is one of the up-to-date education mechanisms. It is important for modern information-based times to construct lifelong training system and learning society. Based on computer network, multimedia and modern information technologies, modern distance education system has been playing an important role in deepening education reform, enlarging education scale, enhancing education quality and fulfilling education fairness.Distance self-determined learning is one of the new and important teaching measures of distance education, and has been adopted by various distance educational college and university. Using computer network to implement distance self-determined learning, it can not only provide handy and full-scale practical educational resources for different types of in-service learners, but also establish a flexible, on-limits, and independent studying environment for students. It makes us possible to develop open education unlimited to time and space.At the same time, the flexibility, opening and self-determination of distance self-determined learning brings some challenge for students. Many students don't know how to study effectively and efficiently, such as how to select courses and study according to the dependant relationship of knowledge architecture. Thus, for the purpose of helping students to learn effectively and regularly, and overcoming the low-efficiency of distance self-determined learning in modern distance education system, it is necessary to study and develop distance self-determined learning support and management system.In this thesis, the background information and the current advanced computer technologies, which are related to modern distance education system, have been studied fully. And then, a distance self-determined learning support and management system is designed and developed. This system is consisted of a series of sub-systems, such as independent learning support, behavior statistics and analysis, process management, and quality assessment.In independent learning support sub-system, the sequence relationship of different courses and the points of knowledge among a specified course are described using directed graph, and then the topological sorting algorithm and backtracking searching algorithm are applied to the graph to guide the students selecting courses and arranging the learning sequence of series of knowledge. In behavior statistics and analysis sub-system, the decision-making model is established for distance courses'resources construction and independent learning. By recording and statistics both of independent learning information and learning behaviors of students based-on distance self-determined learning platform, the behavior data are analyzed using decision-tree based C4.5 algorithm, and this analysis information can provide decision-making supports for construction and development of educational resources. In process management sub-system, by comparing the result of analysis of learning behaviors and requirements of training scheme, the main problems and shortages of students in course study are found out and feed back to these students, and the learning behaviors of students can be under the guidance and control of the system, and then the timed alarming function is applied to remind students to study some pre-requisite courses and knowledge. In quality assessment sub-system, the test question database of every courses and knowledge points are built at first, and then using the try & backtracking algorithm to form the test papers, the distance independent evaluation and on-line test are implemented.The distance self-determined learning support and management system is developed using VC++ programming environment, and the C4.5 classification algorithm and backtracking algorithm are improved and implemented in this system. The experiment proved that this system has pretty good support and management functions suitable for distance self-determined learning and can solve resource construction and quality assurance affairs existed in independent study mechanism of modern distance education system.
