Data Mining In Distance Education System Applied Research

The main content of this paper is to apply data mining technology, which is popularly used in the areas of DNA data analysis and financial data analysis, into distance education system area in order to improve the intelligence of the e-learning system and provide a personalized web learning environment to students. At the beginning of this paper, it summarizes the actual conditions of distance education, points out the deficiency of the current distance education systems, and suggests applying data mining technology into distance education system after analysing how to construct a good individual e-learning environment. In order to learn more about the conception of data mining, the paper introduces this technology in detail, including the definition of data mining, knowledge discovery in databases, construction of dataware and all sorts of methods in data mining. How to apply data mining technology in distance education system is the key content of this paper. From three aspects, we show the application of data mining in distance eduction system. First, we use OLAP technology to diagnose and evaluate student's studying statuses in our system, provide the timely report of student's studying statuses, which can help teachers make teaching tactic and help students study by themselves. Second, we use web mining technology to solve the problem of getting lost when students study in the education system. We use analysis results to impove the web structures of courware and dynamically provide hyperlink to students which they may need. Finally, because Chinese information process and natural language process are very important to improve the veracity of information search in distance education system, we discuss a new method of tagging of Part-Of-Speech, tagging based on decision tree. It avoids problems in conventional tagging based on N-gram Markov Model, which can not precise estimate the probability of interchange of words from rare data. From our experiment, the technology of data mining is very useful in the distance education area. We only experimentally apply data mining in distance education system from above three aspects and we believe that with the development of data mining technology and distance education system, distance education area will use data mining technology more and better.
