The rough underground circumstances bring a great threat to physical and mental health of miners and safety production of mines. For the mine safety production and management, as well as the health of miners, it is necessary to monitor the underground environmental conditions and miners' vital signs. Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a new information acquisition and processing technology with the features of low power consumption, low cost, distributed and self-organization, which is very suitable for monitoring in mine. A Mine Environmental and Personnel Monitoring System based on WSN (MEPMSoWSN) was designed, it employed WSN to monitor the miners' vital signs and mine environments. The MEPMSoWSN was applied to monitor underground environments and miners' vital signs by means of sensor signals' gathering, such as underground gas, carbon dioxide, temperature and humidity, as well as the miners' pulse and body temperature sensor signals etc. According to the special topology of mines and data transfer of mobility nodes, A Same Direction Gradient (SDG) routing protocol was designed to satisfy the underground WSN's data transmission. Proposed a RSSI assistant locating method based on the particularity of banded topology, which provided the miners' positional messages to the management centre in time. The simulation prove that the MEPMSoWSN operated stably and reliably; the SDG routing protocol exploited by underground communications is feasible, which satisfied the requirements of data transmission in mine's monitoring network.
