Wireless sensor network(WSN) is an important research hotspot of information field. It has been widely used in many fields, such as national defense, aerospace, traffic, medical, environmental monitoring, anti-terrorism and other fields. WSN will have good prospects on development and application in the future. Positioning technology is one of the key technologies of wireless sensor networks. It plays a vital role in the practical applications. If the corresponding location information cannot be acquired, the collected data are often meaningless. To solve this problem, the localization of sensor nodes in WSN is the research focus of the dissertation.In the positioning technology of wireless sensor network, TOA, TDOA and RSSI are often used to measure the distance between the receiver and the sender or the AOA is used to determine the angular relationship between the receiver and sender. However, RSSI measurement does not require any additional hardware, therefore, this dissertation mainly focuses on localization algorithm based on RSSI of wireless sensor networks. Research work of the dissertation will be described detailedly in the following.Firstly, starting from the basic of wireless sensor network and the positioning, the dissertation mainly introduces the characteristics, core technologies and topologies of the development of the wireless sensor network and the applications and classification of the existing localization algorithms briefly, which paves the way for the next research theoretically.Then, we focus on the localization algorithm based on RSSI. The RSSI measurements are analyzed by the influencing factors and the improvement of accuracy. Three ranging models of RSSI are also been researched and the RSSI-based location algorithms are made into two categories.Finally, a mobile beacon node localization algorithm based on RSSI of wireless sensor networks is proposed. In practice, reflection, multipath propagation, non-line of sight (NLOS), antenna gain and other issues will affect the received signal strength. Therefore a big advantage of error of ranging based on RSSI exists. The proposed algorithm uses the geometric relationship to find the point having the most accurate signal strength for ranging, so accuracy of the measured distance is improved, and the use of variation of signal intensity obtains geometric relationships to limit the area contained the unknown node; the algorithm makes use of a mobile beacon node track to achieve positioning. Simulation results show that as the number of unknown nodes is increased, the average location error decreases; with increasing speed of beacon node, the average position error increases, but less than trilateral localization algorithm based on RSSI ranging; with the communication radius of beacon node increasing, average positioning error trend is firstly decreased and then increased.
