A lot of network layer mobility technologies are put forward since the mobile communication networks are evolving towards all-IP direction, these mobility technologies are divided into two categories, which are client-based mobility management and network-based mobility management. Client-based mobility management, represented by Mobile IPv6, can archieve the adventages such as stronge flexibility and routing optimization, but it requires terminals supporting mobility protocol and will bring large amount of wireless resources and power consumption; Network-based mobility management, represented by Proxy Mobile IPv6, was designed to exclude terminals from involved in the mobility management procedure, and save the wireless resource and power consumption, but it's lacking in flexibity and routing optimization.Each mobility protocol has its own technological features and deploy mode. In order to effectively deploy various techonologies, this paper designed a convergence structure, in which the two types of mobility management technology were deployed together, this paper also proposed a concrete protocols selection strategy and implementation mechanism.This paper first reviewed the current research status of some relative technologies, and analized the principle of client-based and network-based mobility management, as well as global mobility and local mobility application, then briefly introduced the basic principle of Diameter protocol. Based on these researchs, this paper further designed a client-based and network-based convergence structure, including separating structure solution and integrating structure solution, and finally selected intergrating structure solution through analysis of data transmission performance of the two solutions. Upon completion of the convergence network structure design, this paper proposed a protocol selection strategy based on path cost and handover frequency, and defined the format of protocol data and operating procedure in each relative network entity.Based on the design of convergence structure and protocol selection strategy, this paper implemented the softwares in Linux platform for each function entity, mainly focus on MAG decision-making software and AAA server software In this implementation, decision-making software in MAG implemented functions such as MN association detection, data acquisition from AAA server, measurement of path cost, protocol selection and inter-process communication with PMIPv6 software. AAA server software implemented functions such as Diameter message communication, user data management, and handover frequency updating. Besides that, this paper also made some changes to MIPv6 software and PMIPv6 software to make them work in the convergence network structure.Finally, this paper built up a test-bed to test the convergence system software, including interacting message testing, home address reachable testing, protocol selection procedure testing, and system performance testing. Through analysis of the results of performance testing, it was proved that convergence structure and protocol selection strategy designed by this paper can greatly improve the network performance in handover delay, packets loss, data transmission efficiency and transmission delay.
