Optical correlation target detection and recognition with the characteristic of high parallel processing and large capability belongs to the category of optical information processing. This paper realizes the detection, recognition and location of optical image by real-time joint transform correlator which not only has great speed for disposing but also has high precision for detecting and identifying.In fact, the joint transform correlator is difficult for target recognition because the target image information which is collected from the imaging sensor has large setting noises and some variation such as bit shift, rotation and proportion, etc.The paper based on various algorithms in improving the correlation peak of joint transform correlator, mainly studies maximum average correlation height based filtering algorithm. It is applied to the field of optical correlation target auto detection and recognition. This paper has discussed not only the target recognition with complex background but also the target recognition when the target has size or angle change relative to the template. It uses maximum average correlation height based filtering algorithm to get image filtered for the power spectrum plane, then gets sharper correlation peak. The result of the experiment is satisfying.
