The principle of optical correlation recognition is optical components'modulation of light signal. The target is recognized by parallel relevant operations. Optical information processing has obvious advantages in speed and accuracy. Real-time joint transform correlator is used in this paper to optical correlation detect. The location of target could be detected according to correlation peaks outputted. But the infrared target is difficult to identify because of its low resolution image, contour blur and large noise. To solve this problem, the digital image processing methods on object plane and spectrum plane is studied. New filters are designed in this paper, which based on wavelet analysis, the iterative threshold and other mathematical methods. Its function is to extract or enhance useful information of infrared target in the object plane or spectral plane. Experiment results show that the joint transform correlator with new filter, can effectively highlight the target characteristics, filter background noise and enhance the correlation peak contrast. A lot of infrared target images are experimented and the recognition rate can reach 96%when the contrast greater than 5%. The problem of infrared target recognition is solved well, which makes the optical correlation recognition technology closer to practical.
