The development of network communication in future will be mainly represented by the growth of network transmission speed and the diversification of network applications. Based on the programmable embedded system and dedicated firmware, Network processors achieve high-speed processing performances as ASIC's and provide the flexibility via the programming advantage of RISC processors.This paper describes the importance of programming model in network application software development and analyzes the RTC system architecture of IXP1200 network processors in deep.This paper focuses on the parallel software design method for multi-core network processors. In this paper a parallel programming model is proposed for IXP1200 network processors. It investigates the proposed programming model by software simulation and hardware verification. The results indicate that the software design which based on the provided programming model can achieve the throughput performance of the system requirements and the provided programming model could simplify the programming process and accelerate the development of software design for the Ethernet IP packet forwarding.This paper provides valuable reference about the network processor system structure, application software design and the parallel programming model.
