As a communications equipment to connect different networks, the gateway determines the overall performance of the network to a large extent, while the rapid development of Internet also has put forward higher requirements for the performance of the gateway. Network Processor is a chip specially designed for network processing. Since Network Processor having a high processing speed and a good programmability, researchers can not only achieve the high-speed information processing function of the gateway, but also have the flexibility to expand its function, and even implement the re-configuration&re-construction of its functions through the using of Network Processor. Furthuremore, flow control is an important factor to determine the network performance, so the research on flow control techniques based on Network Processor has an important application value.Based on the project named research on the key techniques and prototype of multi-net gateway, this thesis first introduces the hardware architecture of IXP2350and the Software Portability Framework, as well as flow control techniques supporting differentiated services. Secondly, this thesis discusses the hardware implementation and the software implementation framework of the multi-net gateway, and then focuses on the realization of the packet receiving, forwarding and sending modules, including the function, key data structures and software implementation. Thirdly, this thesis explores the issues of simulation debugging and hardware debugging of the multi-net gateway with the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) Workbench. And combining the differentiated service model, this thesis finally adds the WRED module to the software implementation framework of the multi-net gateway and explores the realization of this module.
